India's Space Odyssey: ISRO Missions & Future Roadmap

1. Landmark Lunar & Solar Achievements

India's space program, spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), achieved historic milestones in lunar exploration:

  • Chandrayaan-3: On August 23, 2023, the Vikram Lander accomplished a precision soft-landing near the lunar South Pole.
  • National Space Day: August 23 is declared National Space Day in India to commemorate this historic achievement.
  • Shiv Shakti Point: Landing site of Vikram Lander officially named 'Shiv Shakti Point'; Chandrayaan-2 crash site named 'Tiranga Point'.
  • Aditya-L1 Mission: India's first dedicated solar observatory, successfully inserted into a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1), approximately 1.5 million km from Earth.
  • 2. Key Rockets & Launch Vehicles

  • PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle): Known as the "Workhorse of ISRO", 4-stage vehicle (Solid-Liquid-Solid-Liquid).
  • LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark 3): Heavy-lift vehicle capable of carrying 4,000 kg to GTO and 8,000 kg to LEO. Used for Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan.
  • SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle): 3-stage all-solid vehicle designed for rapid turnaround small satellite launches (<500 kg).
  • 3. Future Missions Roadmap

  • Gaganyaan: India's flagship Human Spaceflight Mission to send 3 astronauts to an orbit of 400 km for 3 days.
  • Shukrayaan-1: Venus orbiter mission to analyze atmospheric chemistry and surface geology.
  • Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS): India's indigenous space station targeted for operational deployment by 2035.
